You can thread the yarn through the base of the crochet stitches in between multiple knots, if you need to separate them. ![]() More than one “knot” may be necessary, and it is important to pull it or them really tight. I do this on the inside of the piece, but it should be relatively easy to work between the stitches of round one. Try threading the tail through a needle with a large eye (like a large darning needle) and using it to do a “clove hitch”*(clarification below) through the two loops of yarn that make the center of the ring itself there are the loops that let you pull the ring closed.
